SAY IT IN 5 MINUTES

or less

How to Keep Your Story or Speech within 5 minutes

Method #1 - Create this Basic Outline -
1. What do you want your audience to learn, feel or remember about your talk?

2. Write this down in 10 words or less. (World Class Speaker, Craig Valentine, calls this a Foundational Phrase.) This will really get you to know and clarify your message at the start.
3. What short story, anchor or metaphor can you use to support this message?
4. Add a strong but short opening and closing after you have your message honed.

Method #2 - The Skeletal Story
A good story should have a conflict and a resolution to the conflict.
Tell your story in five sentences including each of these story parts:
1. Circumstance
2. Conflict
3. Cure
4. Change

5. Carryout Message

Method #3 - Shrink it to Size.
If your story takes 10 minutes to tell then:
Retell the story in 8 minutes
Retell the story in 6 minutes
Retell the story in 4 minutes
Retell the story in 2 minutes
By shrinking the time, you discover what truly needs to stay in the story so that it makes sense and what can be eliminated.

Never rush a speech or story -- remove content instead.
